SOME KEY SIGNS OF TERMITES

  1. CLICKING SOUND

A clicking sound is one of the important signs of termites’ infestation.  They hit their heads with woods and also shake themselves when they feel in danger. It gives caution signals to other members of the colony. By putting your ear on wood a munching voice can listen. They have the ability to detect noises and vibration through their organs like antennae.

  1.  FLYING TERMITES

Flying Termites are called swarmers or alates. Some of the swarms like to attack at night and attract from light sources, while other would swarm in daylight. Usually, drywood termites swarm after rain and specific time of a year. Their infestation will show off discarded wings which are found in different places in your home. One of interesting facts about them is that in some termite species a male dies right after mating but the queen may live for about 20 years.

  1. WHITE ANTS

A lot of people got confused by calling them as white ants as they look very similar. Here are some differences:-

  • They usually have a light white/creamy colour resembling a translucent.
  • Antennae of termites are not in elbowed shape and are straight.
  • Ant has smaller waste section while termites have a lot thicker ones.
  • Both have two sets of wings. Termites have both sets of the same size while ants have one set larger than other.

There is nothing which is called White ant. If you find any of them, then it may be termites.

  1. A HOLLOW OR PAPERY SOUND OF TIMBER

They have the ability to consume wood from the inside out and make it hollow by eating.

  1. TIGHT FITTED DOORS AND VERY HARD

OPENING WINDOWS

Stiff windows and warped doors are also signs of their infestation. They cause moisture while eating and damage the frame of windows, which will make it harder to open a door.

  1. SMALL TUNNELS IN THE WOOD

It is not easy to locate tunnels made by them. They are very small in size. A piece of broken timber can be a sign of their infestation.

  1. TERMITE DROPPINGS – FRASS

Frass is one of the key signs of these insects. Contrary to subterranean termites, drywood termites don’t like to use feces to build tunnels. They like to push their poo from small holes which are very near to their nests. It will result in a dark powdery substance or small black marks around their infested area.

  1. SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES

Subterranean Termites live underground in soil and their favourite place is your garden and beneath your home. It is very hard to locate this kind of insects.

A regular inspection of your home will keep these creatures away. A very special type of treatment is required to eliminate them with a view to keep your belongings intact.
